Rhapsody “Taras Bulba” based on Gogol’s story
The Kensington Symphony Orchestra conducted by Russell Cable returns to St. John’s Smith Square with a program of three unique works. The concert will be opened by Dvorak’s “The Wood Dove” – the composer’s fourth orchestral poem. It is based on the ballad of the Czech poet Karel Jaromír Erben and tells the story of a woman who poisons her lover, then remarries, but, overcome with guilt, takes her own life.
Next, the orchestra will perform Janacek’s rhapsody “Taras Bulba”, which is based on Nikolai Gogol’s famous story about the Cossack-Polish war of the XVII century. The final chord of the program will be Martin’s Symphony No. 3, written during a summer vacation in Connecticut, its premiere took place in 1945.
