“The Cross of the Romanovs” exhibition opening
“The Cross of the Romanovs” exhibition opening
The exhibition is produced by the Grand Duchess Elizabeth Romanov Society, with sponsorship from the Society for the Development of Historical Education “Double-Headed Eagle”. It will present about 140 professionally restored archival photographs, films, rare documents and oil painted portraits (copies) featuring the Russian Imperial family’s links to the British Royal Family, the exchange of Royal visits, the charitable work of the Russian Imperial family during World War I and the last days of the Tsar’s family and their Martyrdom in July 1918. Some new discoveries from the Russian State Archives will be presented. The exhibition in London is a continuation of the commemorative events which took place in July this year on the Isle of Wight where the monument to the Russian Imperial Family and to the Grand Duchess Elizabeth was solemnly unveiled.
For the Romanov commemoration day on the 19th of September we are planning to invite those who had no chance to come to the Isle of Wight. The main speaker will be the well known Oxford scholar, Metropolitan Kallistos, who will speak about the Phenomenon of Martyrdom in connection with the last Imperial family. Another speaker will be Father Stephen Platt (Oxford), whose talk is entitled “The Last Days of The Romanovs: Sydney Gibbes as a British Witness”.
The exhibition at Barton Manor, East Cowes, displayed not only photos but also the Imperial family’s and Grand Duchess Elizabeth’s belongings, icons, letters and other objects from all around the world. Unfortunately, the exhibition stayed there just for three days although the demand for its continuation was very high. Many distinguished visitors, among them Lord-Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight Sir Martin White, Prince Rostislav Romanov, Vice-Chairman of the Romanov Family Association, church hierarchs and civil authorities, academics and writers, attended the exhibition and the Romanov Monument unveiling ceremony. A new documentary presenting these events will be shown.
The Cross of the Romanovs exhibition will be on display until 27 September.
