100 VGIK the exhibition
For a century, the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) — the oldest film school — has developed some of the world’s top creative talent in the history of film education, of cinema and of the moving image. UCL SSEES Library is honored to work in partnership with VGIK in celebrating its 100 years in UK.
A large amount of current cinematic knowledge and skills is associated with the VGIK experience. The history of film education and cinema, aligns itself closely with the concept of experiment developed in VGIK, a unique, pioneering film institute. VGIK was founded in 1919 by the film director Vladimir Gardin as the Moscow Film School. From 1934 to 1991 the film school was known as the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography (Russian: Всероссийский (ранее Всесоюзный) государственный институт кинематографии). Since 1986, the school has been named after the film director and actor Sergei Gerasimov.
The display consists of items from UCL SSEES library’s collections, books and audio-visual materials about VGIK, its founders, prominent filmmakers-lecturers and Alumni. Film directors who have taught at the institute include Lev Kuleshov, Marlen Khutsiev, Aleksey Batalov, Sergei Eisenstein, Mikhail Romm, Alexander Dovzhenko and Vsevolod Pudovkin. Alumni include Sergei Bondarchuk, Elem Klimov, Kira Muratova, Sergei Parajanov, Alexander Sokurov and Andrei Tarkovsky. For our exhibition, all still images, photos and copies of original documents were provided by VGIK.
