ARCC invites to join screening and talk about Russian wordless animation and works by Alex Budovsky, Garry Bardin and Stephen Coates.
Alex Budovsky was born in St-Petersburg, moved to New York in 1994. In 2000, he graduated from Brooklyn College, (Bachelor of Arts) with a focus on film. From 2010 to 2019, he directed episodes of several animated TV series for major Russian animation studios in Moscow and St-Petersburg, such as Aeroplan, Melnitsa, Metronom and Animacord. Independent short films received awards on many festivals around the world, including Sundance, Tribeca, Florida Film Festival and so on.
In 1968 Garry Bardin graduated from the Moscow Art Theater School-Studio. Worked as a dramatic actor in the theater of Gogol, was shot in the movies. In 1975 he began to work as a director-animator at the Soyuzmultfilm studio, where for 15 years he made 15 films marked by numerous prizes both at home and abroad. In 1991, together with his group, Bardin founded his own studio “Stayer”, where he still works.
Stephen Coates – composer, known for Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist (2008), X-Ray Audio (2016) and Meeting Spencer (2011).
ARCC continues its’ series of Russian-speaking films rarely or never seen in the UK. These films will be introduced from a transcultural perspective. We encourage our members and audiences to move away from revivalist narratives of origin, nation, and belonging and to reflect critically on vicissitudes of history and art in Russian-speaking space – both inside and outside Russia. We emphasize the interconnectedness and complexity of experiences that shape individual and collective imaginaries and the importance of a continuous scholarly and artistic dialogue.
