Tate Modern will open late every Friday and Saturday to engage younger audiences

Starting this September, Tate Modern will extend its opening hours to 9pm every Friday and Saturday. The change follows the huge success of the gallery’s 25th anniversary weekend, which attracted more than 76,000 visitors — 70% of them under the age of 35.

This move builds on the popularity of the Tate Modern Lates programme, launched in 2016. The monthly events — combining live performances, DJ sets, artist talks and workshops — have welcomed over 750,000 people and become a firm fixture in London’s cultural calendar.

Karin Hindsbo, director of Tate Modern, said the new hours reflect demand from Londoners looking for artistic experiences outside the traditional 9-to-5.  The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, welcomed the change, calling it a boost for the capital’s night-time economy and a step towards greater cultural accessibility.

Tate Modern joins other major institutions embracing evening audiences: the V&A remains open until 10pm on Fridays, and the British Museum until 8.30pm. All Tate Modern galleries will be open during late-night hours. Highlights include Do Ho Suh: Walk the House (until 26 October) and Nigerian Modernism (opening 8 October).
