London’s Postal Museum launches project with victims of Horizon scandal
The Postal Museum in London has announced a major new initiative in collaboration with sub-postmasters who were wrongly accused and prosecuted due to the faulty Horizon IT system. The project, part of a wider legacy programme, aims to preserve the memories and testimonies of those affected by what has been described as one of the UK’s gravest miscarriages of justice.

Since the late 1990s, more than 900 sub-postmasters were accused of theft or false accounting based on inaccurate Horizon data. Many were sent to prison, while others lost their livelihoods and savings. Public attention to the scandal was reignited in 2024 with ITV’s drama “Mr Bates vs The Post Office”.
The museum is working in partnership with the official Post Office Horizon IT Inquiry, led by High Court judge Wyn Williams. Earlier this week, museum representatives met with twelve current and former sub-postmasters and family members to shape the project’s direction. Over the course of several meetings, the group will decide how best to share their stories — through exhibitions, archival collections, and public programmes.
Laura Wright, the chief executive of The Postal Museum, said: “It is crucial that those affected by the Horizon scandal can tell their stories, in their own words, and that we help them reach as wide an audience as possible.”
Run by the Postal Heritage Trust, the museum holds the Royal Mail archive and tells the story of Britain’s postal service across five centuries. From pirate attacks on Royal Mail ships to salvage missions during the Blitz, its history now expands to include one of the UK’s most shocking legal scandals.
