Three new towns to be built in the UK
The UK has been facing an acute housing shortage for several years. To address the issue, the government has announced plans to build three new towns, two of which will be located within Greater London. The initiative is part of the New Towns Taskforce programme, aimed at boosting housing supply. The government has pledged to deliver 1.5 million new homes before the next general election.

According to the taskforce report, at least 40% of new housing in each town should be classed as affordable, with half of that designated for social rent. Construction of the first three settlements is expected to begin within the current parliamentary term.
Milton Keynes
Milton Keynes is one of the UK’s most famous “new towns”, originally built in the 1960s. The government is now considering a “renewed town” project, which would add around 40,000 new homes and introduce a mass transit system.
The new transport network is intended to reduce reliance on cars and better connect residential areas with key business and cultural hubs across the city.
Heyford Park, Cherwell
One of the proposed towns will be developed on the site of a former US Air Force base near Oxford. During the Cold War, the base was home to more than 8,000 American military personnel.
Today, the site is seen as an ideal location for new housing due to its strong transport links — just 15 minutes by train to Oxford and under an hour to London. The plan includes around 13,000 new homes as well as social and community infrastructure.
Tempsford, Bedfordshire
In Central Bedfordshire, near Cambridge, a new town of over 40,000 homes is being proposed. The site at Tempsford was chosen for its strategic position at the intersection of the East Coast Main Line and East West Rail, which would give residents fast connections to Cambridge, Oxford, and London.
According to the government, the new settlement is designed not only to ease housing pressures in Cambridge but also to become part of the region’s growing technology and innovation corridor. The New Towns Taskforce report notes plans to develop facilities for companies in the life sciences and natural sciences sectors, which would help boost local employment and create new opportunities for residents.
