Chris Pine to Star in New Chekhov Production Ivanov at the Bridge Theatre
Bridge Theatre has announced its 2026 premiere: Simon Stone will stage a contemporary adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s Ivanov, with Hollywood star Chris Pine, known for the Star Trek reboot and the Wonder Woman films, in the lead role. This will be Stone’s follow-up to his current success, The Lady from the Sea, starring Alicia Vikander and Andrew Lincoln.

Ivanov tells the story of Nikolai Ivanov, a man facing a decline in energy, mounting debts, and disillusionment with his past achievements. Torn between his ailing wife and the attention of a young admirer, he embodies apathy and inner crisis. While less frequently staged than Chekhov’s most famous plays, its psychological depth and subtle humor make it an ideal fit for Stone’s modern interpretation.
The production will run from 4 July to 19 September 2026. Following the current musical Into the Woods, which ends in the spring, the theatre plans to announce another project before Ivanov begins.
For Pine, the role marks a long-awaited return to the stage after more than a decade away. For London audiences, it offers a rare chance to see a major Hollywood actor bring one of Russian literature’s most complex characters to life in a modern, emotionally charged production.
