Maslenitsa – Festival of Russian Songs and Traditions: Family Event

A day-long special Shrovetide celebration – Maslenitsa – with IZBA club for both grown ups and kids alike

At this festival of Russian traditions and folk music, guests will be welcomed with village songs and instrumental compositions, all from different regions of Russia and the Ukraine.

There will be pancakes (‘blini’) aplenty – the symbol of the sun symbolising the shift from winter to spring. The arrival of Maslenitsa (Shrovetide) will be celebrated by making dolls, under the guidance of a master doll maker.

There will also be traditional games to play and dancing in the round.

The second part of the festival will kick off with a demonstration of traditional costume. Guests will get a chance to learn about village fashion, dress up and watch or participate in fashion show.

The festival will wrap up with a joyful ‘vechorka’ (or ‘evening party’) with guests dancing and singing along with live music of the Russian folk ensemble “Vereja”, from Vilnius.
