BFI London Film Festival 2018

The 62nd BFI London Film Festival, in partnership with American Express®, will take place in venues across the UK capital from 10-21 October 2018. This year it screens more 225 films, documentaries and shorts from 77 countries for 12 days.

This year Russia presents the following films:

Dovlatov (2018), Dir Aleksey German Jr. In this powerful account of the struggles of banned writer Sergei Dovlatov, Aleksey German Jr. provides an unusual insight into the literary world of Soviet Russia.

Profile (2018), Dir Timur Bekmambetov. An undercover journalist investigates ISIS recruitment in this wickedly effective suspense story that unfolds entirely on a computer screen.

Summer (2018), Dir Kirill Serebrennikov. Surreal at times, but always sincere, Russian provocateur Kirill Serebrennikov’s latest is a journey into the heart of the Soviet counterculture of the late 1980s.

Fragment of an Empire (1929), Dir Fridrikh Ermler. An exquisitely observed story of an amnesiac Tsarist conscript from the First World War who returns to his present mind ten years after the Communists gained power.

Ukraine features disturbing new film Donbass (2018) from Sergei Loznitsa (My Joy, In the Fog) examines the civil conflict in Ukraine through the prism of black humour and the absurd.

Another film is Woman at War (2018), Dir Benedikt Erlingsson. Director Benedikt Erlingsson’s follow-up to the eccentric comedy Of Horses and Men is a similar genre-fluid trip, playfully steeped in Iceland’s heritage and landscape.

Belarus presents drama by Daria Zhuk Chrystal Swan (2018). In mid-1990s Belarus, a mistake on a DJ’s forged American visa application forces some desperate cover-up attempts in this tough and tender comedy.
