Consecration of Kate Marsden’s Memorial

A monument will be consecrated to honour an extraordinary woman of international humanitarian dimensions who lived in the Borough of Hillingdon during her old age and was buried there in an, as yet, unmarked grave.

The initiative is coming from people in the Sakha Republic (Yakutia), the Russian Far East, where she is remembered with gratitude. The immense difficulty of her journey in 1891 – her steadfast, indomitable resolve to bring relief to individuals suffering from leprosy and isolated in the depths of the far northern forests – endears her to the people of the region today.

This will be the first honour bestowed on her in England, her homeland, for more than a century; and the first time her grave will be marked with her name.
