THE VAKHTANGOV THEATRE’S EUGENE ONEGIN : SCREENING & DISCUSSION WITH PROFESSOR MARIA SHEVTSOVA

Eugene Onegin has often been referred to as an encyclopedia of 19th century Russian life. Rimas Tuminas’ reimagining unfolds in the memory and imagination of Pushkin’s characters. The images are split between past and present, between reality and imagination.The scale of the production constantly shifts from noisy celebrations to secluded contemplation, from crowd scenes to lonely recollections, all of which are drawn together from the past just like the fragments of Tatyana’s love letter, framed and hung on the wall, looming next to and above Onegin’s arm-chair.

A production referred to as “exuberant, indelible and arrestingly beautiful” by the New York Times, The Vakhtangov Theatre’s Eugene Onegin, starring the incomparable Sergey Makovetskiy in the title role, is a sumptuous work that will leave you with enough beautiful memories and images to last a lifetime.

The production runs for 3h30min.

There will be a 15 minute interval during which guests will be offered soft drinks, tea and coffee (included in the ticket price).

The screening will be followed by Q&A with Maria Shevtsova, a Professor of Drama and Theatre Arts at Goldsmiths, University of London, and a Russian theatre expert.

Professor Maria Shevtsova is Professor of Drama and Theatre Arts at Goldsmiths, University of London. Author of more than 140 articles and chapters in collected volumes, Maria’s books include Dodin and the Maly Drama Theatre: Process to Performance (2004), Fifty Key Theatre Directors (2005, co-ed), Jean Genet: Performance and Politics (2006, co-ed), Robert Wilson (2007), Directors/Directing: Conversations on Theatre (2009, co-authored) Sociology of Theatre and Performance (2009), which assembles three decades of her pioneering work in the field, and The Cambridge Introduction to Theatre Directing (2013, co-authored). Her publications have been translated into eleven languages. She is co-editor of New Theatre Quarterly and on the editorial team of Critical Stages.
