Khrushchev’s Thaw. The Housing I Loved by Ilgiz Gimranov

Khrushchev’s Thaw The Housing I Loved is the title of the exhibition of works by Ilgiz Gimranov an artist from Kazan at the Rossotrudnichestvo office in London referring us to multi-story houses which were built for the boom generation of the 1960s during and after Khrushchev’s time (1953-1964) in the Soviet Union.

This was the time when devastation of the Great Patriotic War had been gradually overcome. The tyranny of Stalin was finally over and his crimes became known to the public. The Soviet people for the first time were allowed some freedom of expression during the Thaw at the beginning of 1960s and Yuri Gagarin was the first man to go to space in 1961.

This was the time of hope and dreams of peaceful life when many people moved to new purpose-built houses with full amenities. Many of those who now live in the countries of the former Soveit Union will have warm recollections and happy memories of their childhood while looking at these paintings. They are about simple human values, friendship and love.

The exhibition will be on display until 13 April.
