Russian Cinema: Screening “Kamchatka – the Edge of the Earth” and “Sakhalin Island”
Screenings dedicated to the World Wildlife Day: Two nature documentaries, depicting the most captivating and stunning natural scenery and travel destinations in Russia.
Film “Kamchatka – the Edge of the Earth”
Welcome to the Kamchatka Peninsula: a world of wonders. The Valley of Geysers staggers the mind with iridescent eruptions and clouds of hot swirling steam. Kamchatka’s hundred-plus volcanoes thrill the senses: you can feel the Earth’s pulse pounding through your feet in the Uzon Caldera, while your own heart freezes on the slopes of Klyuchevskaya Sopka at the thought that at any moment jets of searing lava may spew out of the volcano’s crater. Below the looming volcanoes, you can raft along mountain rivers through the primordial majesty of Kamchatka’s forests and catch a glimpse of the Kamchatka brown bear (the largest in the world), until you finally reach Kamchatka’s shores, strewn with black volcanic sand: the shores of the Pacific Ocean, which links the poles of our planet.

Film “Sakhalin Island”
The seemingly never-ending hilly terrain; the centuries-old pine trees reaching up to the sky; the rivers teeming with fish ready for spawning; the playful grey whales in the sea; the storms, the typhoons… Welcome to Sakhalin, Russia’s largest island. It is a place with the capacity to surprise even the most seasoned of travellers, where life is governed by its unique climate. The island is home to some incredible, and very rare, flora and fauna – over a hundred species of amazing plants and animals found on Sakhalin are on the IUCN Red List. Sakhalin’s indigenous Nivkh people, while small in number, are warm and welcoming, happy to provide an insight into their traditional way of life and spirituality. Today, the island is a nature reserve, untouched by modern civilisation. It is a true gem of the Russian Far East, a beacon standing above the waves of the Pacific Ocean.
