Russian Masterpieces: Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Stravinsky
The ‘quintessentially Russian’ (International Piano Magazine) pianist Yulia Chaplina curates a programme of Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Scriabin and Stravinsky to celebrate International Music Day and dedicated to the Russia – UK Year of Music 2019.
In a concert dedicated to the cultural exchange between Russia and the UK, the programme is performed by artists from the UK, Russia, Italy, Germany and Switzerland. Artists include Russian violinist Igor Yuzefovich, the new joint leader of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He is joined by Russian violinist Yuri Kalnits is the two-time recipient of the prestigious Diapason d’Or award and British violist Roger Chase, has been praised by the Sunday Times for ‘outstanding expressive eloquence’.
Timothée Botbol, a Park Lane Group Young Artist and Concordia Artist from Switzerland, plays the cello, as does German musician Julia Morneweg, who has ‘striking communication of emotion and expressive fluidity’ according to MusicWeb International.
On wind, British clarinettist Peter Cigleris is the winner of the John Ireland Chamber music award, Welsh bassoonist Angharad Thomas is the winner of the John Fussell Award for Welsh Postgraduate Musicians, and British hornist Mark Smith is the winner of the Douglas Moore Horn Prize.
The piano is played by Simone Tavoni, Italian winner of the BBC pathway scheme 2016.
