Premiere Performance ‘Nakanune’ from Sasha Ilyukevich
Pushkin House welcomes again London-based Belarusian Troubadour Sasha Ilyukevich and his Ever-Pulsating Collective ‘The Highly Skilled Migrants’, this time to premiere ‘Nakanune’ (Eve), an Art Performance combing Music, Poetry and Video Projections.
Under the Bold Slogan “Slap to the Face of Public Taste”, the Title of the Poetic Anthology from some Prominent Russian Futurists, published more than a hundred years ago, Ilyukevich also invites viewers to plunge beyond the conventional language and celebrate the forms and sounds of words and syllables not only in their harmonious combinations, creating sonic meaning, but also in their neglected nudity rising to the heights of emotional inconsistencies.
Sasha Ilyukevich and ‘The Highly Skilled Migrants’ create an incomparable brew of post punk electric energy and topical lyricism. Ilyukevich writes songs in Russian to capture the essence of Eastern-Slavic heritage but translates his lyrics into English to convey the ideas behind his songs and share the nuances of language and emotion. His songs fuse Western and Eastern-Slavic sensibilities to bridge a historical divide and engage understanding between two cultures to reverse prejudice between East and West.
