Workshop: Settling into the English Language
You are invited to come and write creatively at this group writing workshop in order to feed your ability and pleasure in writing and speaking English. It is open to first language Russian speakers who are in the process of becoming more fluent in their adopted language.
The emphasis will be on experiencing flow and fluidity with English words. The workshop is led by a trained facilitator, experienced in creating a safe environment in which to explore and experiment subjectively. A fluent Russian speaker will also help deliver the workshop. Come with a willingness to become more open, playful and adventurous in English!
Workshop format: A three-hour structured workshop which will guide you through progressively more engaging approaches to creative, reflective and expressive writing. You will be offered a variety of stimulating prompts to open up possibilities of how you express yourselves in English to the theme of ‘becoming more at home’. This will include a warm-up and two or three longer writing exercises. Poetry, significant objects, and pictures will be starting places to write from. You can exercise choice in how much or how little of your writing you share with others in the group. You will have the opportunity to share what you write with a partner, and also with the group.
Who is this workshop suitable for: This workshop is open to first-language Russian speakers now living or staying in the UK, with an interest and desire to enjoy the English language more. Your writing will not be seen by anyone but you and you will not be judged on your spelling, punctuation or grammar. Other than basic English language proficiency, no other skills, knowledge or experience is required.
Refreshments: Tea and biscuits will be provided at the start of the workshop. Participants should make their own lunch arrangements.
