Original 1977 “Star Wars” to be screened in London for the first time in decades

For the first time in decades, the original 1977 Star Wars film will return to the big screen — and not just in any setting, but as part of the British Film Institute’s (BFI) “Film on Film” festival.

The screening is set for 12 June 2025 and marks a rare opportunity for fans to experience the theatrical cut of Star Wars as it was originally released. Today, only the digitally altered versions are available on streaming platforms, making this event especially significant for purists and cinema lovers alike.

Other highlights of the festival include a presentation of the original US broadcast pilot of Twin Peaks, introduced by the show’s star Kyle MacLachlan. “Film on Film” will run from 12 to 15 June across BFI Southbank and BFI IMAX, celebrating the physical medium in all its grainy glory.
