Afisha.London explores the upcoming auction and its most remarkable artifacts.

Imperial heritage: Fabergé’s iconic works at Christie’s auction

A highlight of the London Collections auction is a selection of rare Fabergé pieces from The Wernher Collection, originally assembled by Lady Zia Wernher, Countess Anastasia Mikhailovna de Torby, and her husband, Sir Harold Wernher.

Lady Zia’s parents — Grand Duke Michael Mikhailovich of Russia and Countess Sophie Merenberg, Countess de Torby — were among Fabergé’s most distinguished clients, both in London and St. Petersburg. Some pieces in the collection were recorded as purchases by Emperor Nicholas II and his mother, Empress Maria Feodorovna, and were likely gifted to Grand Duke Michael.

Stone flowers and the elephant collection

The centrepiece of the London auction is a selection of hardstone flowers set in rock crystal vases: forget-me-nots (estimated: £150,000–250,000) and wild strawberries (£120,000–180,000). These are considered to be Fabergé’s most exquisite creations.

The auction will also feature a collection of elephant figurines, carved from various hardstones, reflecting Countess de Torby’s fascination with these animals.

The exhibition is now open for viewing, with bidding set to take place in London on April 8 and 9. This is a rare opportunity for collectors to acquire some of the last remaining Fabergé treasures still in private hands.

Many works by Fabergé, including the famous Easter eggs, can only be seen in museums. Watch Afisha.London’s in-depth review of the historic Fabergé exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum:
