Keira Knightley in the stage adaptation of The Lives of Others
The psychological drama about total surveillance in East Germany in 1984 is set to become one of the defining West End premieres of the season. Keira Knightley, Stephen Dillane and Luke Thompson will lead the cast.
Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s original film was released in 2006 and went on to win the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, as well as BAFTA and César awards. At the heart of the story is a playwright and actress placed under constant observation by a Stasi officer whose faith in the system gradually begins to fracture.
The production is directed by Robert Icke, celebrated for his bold contemporary interpretations of classic works and politically charged theatre. The play marks a new collaboration between Icke and producer Sonia Friedman following their acclaimed projects 1984, Hamlet and The Doctor.
From 29 October 2026 to 9 January 2027.

Ralph Fiennes and Miranda Raison in Grace Pervades
Ralph Fiennes, the celebrated star of Schindler’s List and The Grand Budapest Hotel, returns to the West End in David Hare’s new play Grace Pervades. Following a sold-out run at Theatre Royal Bath, the production transferred to London this spring and has already become one of the most talked-about theatrical events of 2026.
The play explores the legendary partnership between Victorian stage icons Henry Irving and Ellen Terry, whose artistic and personal relationship shaped British theatre at the end of the nineteenth century. Fiennes takes on the role of Irving — the first actor in history to receive a knighthood — while Ellen Terry is played by Miranda Raison, known for Doctor Who, Ghosts and Warrior.
Critics have already praised the production enthusiastically: The Guardian described the performances as “exceptional”, while The Telegraph called the play “a love letter to theatre”.
From 24 April to 11 July 2026.

Cate Blanchett in Electra/Persona
Director Benedict Andrews’ new production fuses Sophocles’ ancient tragedy Electra with Ingmar Bergman’s cult psychological masterpiece Persona. The cast includes Cate Blanchett, Nina Hoss and rising star Ella Lily Hyland.
At the centre of the story is Electra, consumed by a relentless thirst for justice following the murder of her father. Yet during a stage performance, the heroine suddenly loses her voice, and the narrative shifts into an unsettling psychological exploration of identity, memory and the fragile boundary between performance and reality.
Benedict Andrews, acclaimed for his visceral staging of A Streetcar Named Desire, serves as both writer and director of the production. The score will be composed by Academy Award-winner Hildur Guðnadóttir, best known for her haunting soundtrack to Joker. Tickets go on sale on 21 May.
From 19 August to 10 October 2026.

Gillian Anderson and Billy Crudup in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
Set on a New England university campus, Edward Albee’s legendary drama begins after a faculty party, when Martha and George invite a younger couple back to their home for drinks. What starts as an apparently civil late-night gathering gradually descends into a brutal emotional battlefield. Fuelled by alcohol, manipulation and years of accumulated resentment, the evening strips away the line between truth and illusion, while the tension between the four characters grows increasingly dangerous.
The production is directed by Marianne Elliott, the Tony and Olivier Award-winning director behind War Horse, Company and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Gillian Anderson has admitted that she dreamed of playing Martha for many years, describing the role as one of the most demanding and emotionally exposed characters in modern drama.
From 21 September to 19 December 2026.

Tilda Swinton returns to the stage in Man to Man
Tilda Swinton will return to the theatre stage for the first time in more than three decades in a new production of Man to Man. The production will open at London’s Royal Court Theatre in autumn 2026 before transferring to New York.
At the heart of the story is Ella, a woman living in 1930s Germany. After the death of her husband, she begins wearing his clothes and concealing her identity in an attempt to survive within a world shaped by war, dictatorship and constant fear. Gradually, the play unfolds into a dark and deeply unsettling meditation on loneliness, violence and the human instinct for survival.
The role was one of Swinton’s earliest major theatrical breakthroughs: she first played Ella in 1988. The new production reunites much of the original creative team, including director Stephen Unwin and celebrated designer Bunny Christie.
From 5 September to 24 October 2026.

After years abroad, Ranevskaya returns to her ancestral estate only to discover that the family home and beloved cherry orchard are facing imminent sale. As the old social order slowly collapses, long-standing bonds begin to weaken, while ambition and pragmatism prove stronger than memory and tradition.

Chris Pine makes his London stage debut in a new production of Ivanov
American actor Chris Pine will make his British theatre debut in Ivanov, one of the most highly anticipated London premieres of 2027. The production of Anton Chekhov’s play will be directed by Simon Stone, whose contemporary reimagining of Three Sisters received widespread acclaim.
The classic drama will be relocated to the present day. Its protagonist, Nikolai Ivanov, finds himself trapped in a profound midlife crisis: debts are mounting, his marriage is falling apart, and an overwhelming sense of emotional emptiness grows harder to escape. His attempts to reclaim meaning and pleasure gradually lead him into a spiral of reckless decisions and an affair.
Stone reunites with the creative team behind The Lady from the Sea, which The Guardian described as “gripping and magnificent”. This new version of Ivanov promises to preserve Chekhov’s signature irony while exposing the anxieties and disillusionment of a contemporary generation.
From 27 July to 16 October 2027.

Sadie Sink and Noah Jupe in a new production of Romeo and Juliet
Shakespeare’s tragedy of first love and family rivalry returns to the West End in a new production directed by Robert Icke. The leading roles will be played by Sadie Sink, best known for Stranger Things, and Noah Jupe, the star of A Quiet Place and Hamnet. The production marks the West End debut for both actors.
Set in Verona, the story follows two teenagers whose chance encounter leads to a love affair doomed from the very beginning. Icke places particular emphasis on the youth of Romeo and Juliet, the fragility of first love and the cruelty of the adult world, whose choices slowly and inevitably push the story towards tragedy.

Catherine Tate in Oh, Mary!
One of the most talked-about American comedies of recent years has arrived in the West End. Oh, Mary! — Cole Escola’s absurdist and darkly comic play about Mary Todd Lincoln in the final weeks before the assassination of Abraham Lincoln — has already become a theatrical sensation in the United States.
From 27 April, the lead role in the London production is played by Catherine Tate, the star of The Catherine Tate Show and Doctor Who. Here, Mary is portrayed not as a historical footnote to a great president, but as the tragicomic heroine of her own strange and deeply frustrated life, shaped by unrealised ambitions, alcohol and theatrical fantasy.
The production has received ecstatic reviews from critics: The New York Times described it as “one of the best comedies of recent years”, while the Broadway production won Tony Awards for Best Actor and Best Direction. The London production is directed by Sam Pinkleton.
Until 18 July 2026.

Adrian Lester in Cyrano de Bergerac
Following sold-out performances and glowing reviews, Cyrano de Bergerac transfers to the West End in a bold new adaptation of Edmond Rostand’s classic play, already hailed as one of the standout British theatre productions of the season.
The title role will be performed by Olivier Award winner Adrian Lester. His Cyrano is not a romantic relic of another era, but a living, ironic and painfully vulnerable man. A brilliant poet and swordsman, he helps another suitor win Roxane’s heart while concealing his own feelings behind the words he writes for his rival.

Director Simon Evans and co-adaptor Debris Stevenson preserve the lyrical beauty of Rostand’s original text while introducing a sharper contemporary rhythm and emotional immediacy.
